Collect

Lord of all power and might,

the author and giver of all good things:

graft in our hearts the love of your name,

increase in us true religion,

nourish us with all goodness,

and of your great mercy keep us in the same;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

Post Communion

Lord God, whose Son is the true vine and the source of life,

ever giving himself that the world may live:

may we so receive within ourselves

the power of his death and passion

that, in his saving cup,

we may share his glory and be made perfect in his love;

for he is alive and reigns, now and for ever.

St Paul gives a remarkable analysis on the significance of Christ’s
salvation work. The Greeks spoke of a dead person as ‘hidden in the
earth’: the Christian is now ‘hidden with Christ in God’ – a huge claim.
Paul argues that one of the fruits of this revolution is that in Christ all
barriers which divide are destroyed. Note that in the ancient world
Scythians were thought of as the lowest of the low!

 Epistle

Colossians 3:1-11

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

2Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

3For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

4When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

5Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

6For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

7In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.

8But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

9Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

10And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

11Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

Alleluia Alleluia  Blest are the pure in heart for they shall see God, saith the Lord Alleluia

This parable is unique to this Gospel. Jesus, wisely refraining from
being drawn into a personal financial dispute, takes the opportunity to
show a different attitude to material possessions in a vividly powerful
tale. Never was a story so full of the ‘I, me, my and mine’ pronouns nor
a man so breathtakingly short-sighted!

Gospel

Luke 11:13-21

And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.
14And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?
15And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
16And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
17And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
18And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
19And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
20But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
21So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

Death of Dr Charles Mould

We were sad to hear of the death of Dr Charles Mould, who used to play the organ at Heythrop for many years. John Sword described him as a lovely man (and a fine organist), always full of humorous anecdotes.
